ROME- Faithless, bored, dragging, with no sense of direction. This is how the Thirty-somethings of today are described in literature and film. Instead, Raoul Bova, who is 34 years old, knows what he wants. He is not afraid of responsibilities (he has a wife and two kids), hates defeatism, his head and heart are filled with ideals, and he has a high temperature (the fever is directly proportional to his damned will to live). His face is dirtied by his beard, his look is frank and direct; shyness, fists in his pockets and his gun in the holster, Raoul Bova walks back and forth wearing out the asphalt of the Collegio Romano Square. He is the main character of Attack on the State, the made for television film on the new Red Brigades. Another policeman, another hero…

“But very different from Ultimo. Ultimo is a man of action, an instinctive man that hunts down criminals putting his heart and soul into it. Ultimo is the last of the pure. This policeman is cerebral, intuitive, patient to the end, obsessive processing many feeble clues and savoring phrases and their nuances to put together a puzzle stained by blood.”

A character far from who you are...
“Yet, that now thinks a lot like me…”

What do you mean?

“It’s true that roles affect an actor, just as the opposite is true. That’s how the second commissioner of the Digos, Diego Marra, has also become a bit like me. I put his will to win in his heart and in his guts, regardless of all the bureaucracy and the dark power of certain politicians, beyond those limits that, as we all know, tie the hands of the police force. We just have to look back to the cinema that denounces social injustice of Petri and Rosi, back to a reality that, maybe and unfortunately, still exists today.”

What is your take on the Red Brigades?

“I see them as armed fanatical bands. Marcos said: ‘we are an army of dreamers, that’s why we are invincible’. The Red Brigades reach their ideal through death. But death and dreams don’t fit together. One can reach dreams only through life. Who are the Brigaders? People struck by collective folly, radicals that act to destabilize, not to construct. That’s why they shall never win.”

Still, citizens remain witnessing victims.

“Why doesn’t anyone first say: this is it, let’s make one united front. Why does everyone think: anyway, what can I do alone? These are the years of solitude, because of laziness probably, or fear. A waste, because a united answer holds a strength at the umpteenth power. And all the persons who couldn’t care less because of self-absorption, would together become a terrible, undefeatable adversary.’

What do you fight against in life?

‘I’m not sure it’s about fighting. Now, I try to understand what surrounds me, who I am, what I expect from me. I learned to accept that which is given to me, to go with the flow and not go against it, because it would be like swimming upstream. I have always felt like a gypsy, with no roots, so it’s never been too difficult to adapt to situations, to places.’

What is your den?

‘My wife, our children.’

And your secret shelter?

‘I’ll have one, for sure. If I don’t have one it’s probably because it’s not the right time.’

Fatalist, but also wise, isn’t it a bit much for your age?

‘The older generation would say to that: at 30 I had already been in the war and was father to five mouths to feed… Therefore, no, it isn’t too much. That’s who I am, I didn’t live a careless adolescence but one of discipline; my goal was to competition. Maybe because I grew up in a family where responsibility wasn’t a word but a rule.’

What do you hate the most?

‘Looking without acting upon it. And complaining. I detest anyone who pities him or herself without trying to change the hand they were dealt.’

How much have you changed as an actor?

‘A lot. My job has gone hand in hand with my life. It has been filled with joy, with disappointments and with disillusionments. Before I was more controlled, thus more afraid. Now, I let go, sometimes even surprising myself! The career of an actor, at least mine, is divided between one’s first film and the following ones: those in which you try to find again that candor of the first time. Ours is a job one cannot grasp, it’s indefinable, as if writing on water.’

Did it teach you anything?

‘It taught me to be selfless. By digging into my characters, when I find myself, for example, with my wife, automatically I try to imagine her mood, I try to put myself in her shoes. That’s why often, I find myself saying she is right, even apologize to her. I wonder if that’s a good thing…’
